How the calculator works

How to calculate a test grade

Enter the number of questions on the test and the number you missed. The calculator finds your correct answers, turns them into a percentage, and shows the conventional letter-grade scale used on this page.

1

Find correct answers

correct = total questions − missed questions

2

Find the percentage

percentage = (correct ÷ total questions) × 100

3

Check the grade scale

Use your teacher’s scale if it differs from the one here

Example: 50 questions, 7 missed

50 − 7 = 43 correct. Then 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%, which is a conventional B.

Example: 20 questions, 2 missed

20 − 2 = 18 correct. Then 18 ÷ 20 × 100 = 90%, which is a conventional A−.

A quick note about letter grades

This tool uses a common 90/80/70/60 letter-scale pattern with plus and minus grades. Your school may round differently or use weighted questions, extra credit, curves, or another grading policy. The percentage is the reliable starting point; your course syllabus is the final rule.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a test grade?

Subtract missed questions from the total questions, divide the correct answers by the total, and multiply by 100. This calculator does that automatically.

How many questions can I miss and still get an A?

It depends on your school’s grading scale and the number of questions. On the conventional scale used here, an A begins at 93%, so the number of misses you can afford changes with the test length.

Why is my teacher’s grade different from this calculator?

Teachers may use a different letter scale, rounding rule, weighted questions, extra credit, dropped questions, or a curve. Check the course syllabus or ask your teacher when the result differs.

Can this calculator work out a weighted course grade or final-exam target?

For weighted course categories, use the Weighted Average Calculator. For the score needed on a final exam, use the Final Exam Calculator.
